The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has unveiled its shortlists in 10 Oscar categories, including documentary, international feature, original song, and score, with notable mentions for Selena Gomez's ballad “Mi Camino” and Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’s score for “Challengers.”
The musicals “Emilia Pérez” and “Wicked” stood out in multiple categories. Netflix’s bold drama “Emilia Pérez,” centered on a transgender drug lord, advanced in international feature, original score, sound, hair and makeup, and for two original songs – “Mi Camino” and “El Mal,” performed by Zoe Saldaña. Meanwhile, “Wicked” progressed in hair and makeup, sound, visual effects, and original score, though its lack of new songs excluded it from the original song category.

The semifinalists for best song include prominent artists such as Pharrell Williams with “Piece by Piece,” Elton John and Brandi Carlile for “Never Too Late,” Robbie Williams for “Forbidden Road,” and Lin-Manuel Miranda for “Tell Me It’s You” from “Mufasa: The Lion King.” Diane Warren, a 15-time nominee, may secure her 16th nod with her contribution to “The Six Triple Eight.”

Below-the-line categories spotlighted films such as Deadpool & Wolverine and Alien: Romulus for sound and visual effects, while Dune: Part Two appeared in sound, visual effects, and makeup and hair. Hans Zimmer’s score for Dune was ineligible due to its reliance on music from the first film, though he received recognition for his work on Blitz. Other score semifinalists include Danny Elfman for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and Kris Bowers for The Wild Robot.
