Murphy, a beloved bald eagle who gained attention in 2023 for incubating a rock, has died at the age of 33, following severe storms that recently swept through Missouri.

The World Bird Sanctuary in Valley Park, where Murphy lived, announced his passing last week. Officials suspect the powerful storms—which destroyed homes and claimed 12 lives—may have played a role in his death.

While birds at the sanctuary have access to shelters and emergency plans are in place for extreme weather, no evacuations were conducted since tornadoes did not directly threaten the facility. Murphy was housed with three other birds, all of whom survived.

A necropsy revealed that Murphy suffered head trauma. The sanctuary stated on social media that it remains unclear whether he startled and hit his head while leaping from a perch or if the storm’s wind and rain contributed to the injury.

Murphy became widely known in 2023 when he was seen diligently incubating a rock, displaying strong parenting instincts. His dedication was later rewarded when he was chosen to foster an injured eaglet, which he nurtured until its successful release into the wild. He later cared for a second eaglet, which is expected to be released this summer.

To honor his legacy, the sanctuary announced plans to name its future eagle fostering aviary “Murphy’s Manor,” ensuring his memory lives on for years to come.
