No tourist will be allowed to carry single-use plastic products in the Sundarbans for the sake of conservation of biodiversity of the world's largest mangrove forest, said Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Md Shahab Uddin on Monday.
“The environment and biodiversity are being severely damaged there (in the Sundarbans) due to the single-use plastics,” he said, while addressing a discussion arranged by the Department of Environment (DoE) here in the city on the occasion of the Independence and National Day 2023.
The Environment Minister also instructed the secretary of his ministry to take necessary steps to stop the use of single-use plastics in the Sundarbans.
He said a special programme has been taken to stop the use of single-use plastics in 40 upazilas of the 12 coastal districts in the country.
Shahab Uddin said the dream of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is now being fulfilled by his able daughter Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to bring a smile on the faces of the helpless people of the country.
Pointing at the officials, he said everyone will have to work in unison to transform the country into a Smart Bangladesh under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Deputy Minister for Environment Habibun Nahar and Environment Secretary Dr Farhina Ahmed, among others, spoke at the discussion chaired by DoE Director General Dr Abdul Hamid.
