Widespread public awareness and behavioural change are essential to reducing single-use plastic pollution in Bangladesh, speakers said at a national media training workshop organised by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) Bangladesh on Saturday.
More than 50 journalists and broadcasters from leading television channels, newspapers and online news portals took part in the workshop.
The event highlighted the role of the media in promoting recycling, responsible plastic use and environmental protection.
In his remarks, UNIDO Bangladesh Country Representative Alamgir Hussain urged journalists to make environmental advocacy a personal mission.
Dr Abdullah Al Mamun, an official of the Department of Environment, said mass media had played a significant role in public health and family planning campaigns and could similarly help promote plastic recycling.
