Among the enchanting natural cascades in Bangladesh, Khoiyachora Waterfall is popular among travellers as the “queen of waterfalls” for its splendor. History of Khoiyachora Waterfall

The history of this great waterfall spans about 50 years. The area was densely forested and remote, making it challenging to discover. It is believed that the natural spring may have formed due to a mountain landslide.

The region from Baraiadhala Block to Kunder Hat is currently known as Baratakia Block. In 2010, it was officially designated as a national park, covering 2933.61 hectares of hilly land. The waterfall was then recognized as a prominent natural feature. Locals commonly refer to this spring as Chatal.

In 2017, the government initiated an eco-tourism development project to preserve this waterfall. The project covers the areas of Ramgarh, Sitakunda, and the Reserve Forest of Chattogram North Forest Division.

Location of Khoiyachora Waterfall and Origin of Name

Khoiyachora is the most renowned of the springs in the Mirsharai upazila of Chattogram division. It is situated to the north of Baratakia Bazar in the Khoiyachora part along the Dhaka-Chittagong highway. Just venture about 4.2 km eastward from this highway, and this waterfall will be visible. 

As the fall is nestled deep within the mountains, no vehicle can reach its base directly. First, take a CNG autorickshaw from the Dhaka-Chittagong highway to the village adjacent to the fall. From there, the only way to reach the source of the spring is on foot.

The waterfall takes its name, Khoiyachora, from the hill within the Khoiyachora union on which it is located.

What to See on a Khoiyachora Tour

This waterfall boasts nine significant cascades, each with its unique beauty. The sound of the falling water can also be heard from Mirsharai Thakurda Dighi. Along the way, the journey through the mountain's depths will unveil verdant winding village paths, bamboo groves, field lanes, and diverse trails. To reach the destination, at least four hills need to be traversed.

The melodious sounds echoing through the green landscape swiftly dispels the monotony of daily life. A few dips in the waterfall are sufficient to cleanse the soul. Best Time to Visit Khoiyachora Waterfall

However, be aware of the risks associated with hilly roads during heavy rainfall. Therefore, it is recommended to travel before or after peak monsoon season.

How to Get to Khoiyachora Waterfall from Dhaka

Dhaka to Mirsharai 

Board any bus bound for Chattogram from a Dhaka bus terminal. Non-AC buses typically cost between BDT 420 to 480, while AC buses may range from BDT 800 to 1100. Disembark at Baratakia Bazar in Mirsarai, in front of Khoiyachora Ideal School.

Alternatively, take a local bus from Sayedabad bus stand at a more affordable fare.

In the case of preferring the train, take any intercity train from Dhaka to Chattogram and get off at Feni station. Depending on the category, the fare may vary from BDT 265 to BDT 800 per person. From Feni station, rickshaws or auto-rickshaws can transport you to Mohipal bus stand in Feni for BDT 10 to 15. From here, several local buses can drop you off in front of Khoiyachora Ideal School.

Mirsharai to Khoiyachora Fall

After arriving at the school, seek a CNG autorickshaw to reach the entrance of Waterfall Path, which costs BDT 100. Alternatively, the entire route can be covered on foot with the guidance of locals. Walk eastward along the village road from the Dhaka-Chittagong highway for approximately 10 minutes until encountering the railway line. After an additional 10 to 15 minutes of walking, the trail will be in sight.

While trekking, it is advisable to use bamboo sticks and anklets for support, available for BDT 20 at the beginning of the trail path. The journey through thick bushes and trees to the waterfall takes approximately an hour and a half.

Accommodation During the Khoiyachora Waterfall Trip

There are no accommodations available near this waterfall or in the Baratakiya Bazar of Khoiyachora. Good news for those planning to stay in tents: they will have the opportunity to camp at the base of the waterfall.

However, in the case of preferring hotel accommodations for the night, Sitakunda is the best option. There, quality rooms ranging from BDT 500 to 1600 per person can be found.

Numerous restaurants can be found during the trek, where food can be ordered and enjoyed on the way back. These offer various curry dishes with unlimited rice and dal at affordable prices. Farm chicken with rice costs BDT 100, while free-range chicken costs BDT 130. Adding potato and salad brings the total to BDT 140.

Additionally, Mirsharai has some decent eateries. Keep in mind that most hotels close after 5 pm. And when looking for an alternative to all these, Sitakunda remains as the last resort.

Necessary Precautions while Traveling the Khoiyachora Waterfall

The road leading to the spring is often slippery and challenging to pass. Especially the top cascades require steep hill climbs. Ensure high-quality grip shoes are worn before beginning the trek. Take each step slowly and carefully without haste.

Watch out for leeches in water and grassy areas. Keeping salt or gulls at hand can help deter leeches.

As the day progresses, it can get dark, and there is limited access to electricity and network connectivity. Carry a fully charged power bank and a torchlight with fresh batteries.
There is a risk of getting stranded during heavy rains. So try to arrive here as early as possible.
If bringing light food and water bottles, make sure not to leave them behind and spoil the environment.

Be polite to locals, especially when buying from shops or dealing with guides. Avoid actions that inconvenience other travelers, including local people.
