Former adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan has collected a nomination paper for the Cumilla-3 (Muradnagar) constituency to contest the upcoming national election as an independent candidate, scheduled for February 12, 2026.
NCP activist Ramjanul Karim collected the nomination paper on behalf of Asif Mahmud from the office of the Cumilla Deputy Commissioner (DC) and Returning Officer on Wednesday (December 24), DC office official Md Saheb Ali confirmed on Saturday.
NCP Muradnagar Upazila Chief Coordinator Minhajul Haque said Asif Mahmud had sent his national identity card and nomination papers were collected from the offices of the Deputy Commissioner and Returning Officer.
“We are hopeful that Asif Mahmud will contest from Muradnagar,” he said.
Minhajul also said a dramatic decision could be made regarding alliances, adding that nomination papers had been purchased from multiple constituencies. “A final decision will be made after reviewing the situation. There is still time,” he added.
Earlier, Asif Mahmud resigned from his post as adviser to the interim government on December 10 and announced his intention to contest from the Dhaka-10 constituency. He has already become a voter there and has begun campaigning.
However, no official statement has yet been received from Asif Mahmud regarding his participation in the election from Muradnagar.
