A total of ten candidates have submitted their nomination papers for the mayor's race in the upcoming Barishal City Corporation election, to be held June 12.
On the final day of submitting nominations, 10 candidates submitted nomination papers for the mayor's post, 146 for the general councilor in 30 wards and 42 for the 10 reserved councilor posts, Returning Officer of Barishal City Corporation Election Md Humayun Kabir said.
Islami Andolan candidate Mufti Syed Muhammad Faizul Karim and independent candidate Kamrul Ahsan Rupan submitted their nomination papers for the mayor race on Tuesday.
Earlier, Awami League candidate Abul Khayer Abdullah, Jatiya Party’s Iqbal Hossain Taposh, Jaker Party’s Mizanur Rahman Hawladar, another Islami Andolan candidate Mufti Ishak Mohammad Abul Khayer and Independent candidates Ali Hossain Hawladar, Lutfar Kabir, Md Asaduzzaman and Nesar Uddin submitted their nomination for the top office.
Meanwhile, 146 candidates filed nomination papers for the post of general councillor in 30 wards and 42 filed their papers for 10 reserved seats.
Returning Officer Md Humayun Kabir said that every candidate has been instructed to follow the electoral code of conduct.
“It is irrelevant what occurred in previous elections. The election this year will be conducted in a free and equitable manner,” he said. “We are dedicated to delivering a fair and transparent election.”
The electoral symbols among the candidates will be distributed on May 26 after scrutinising the submitted nomination papers on May 18. The last date for withdrawal of candidature is May 25.
