The Dhaka North City unit of BNP has expelled the president and general secretary of its Airport organisational ward over their alleged involvement in the snatching of gold jewellery sent from Malaysia by an expatriate.

The expelled leaders are unit President Abdur Rauf and General Secretary Rana Hossain Rubel.

The decision was approved by Dhaka North City BNP Convener Md Aminul Haque and Member Secretary Mostafa Zaman on Monday.

Earlier, Airport thana unit Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) President Md Ripon Hossain and General Secretary Al Amin Hossain Shanto were also expelled from the organisation over their alleged involvement in the incident.

The Dhaka North City unit of JCD announced their expulsion in a press release on Monday, saying the action was taken based on specific evidence of violations of organisational discipline.

It also directed all its leaders and activists to sever all organisational contact and ties with the two expelled leaders.

According to the statement of a case filed over the incident and related sources, Malaysian expatriate Kawsar Hossain sent 200 grams of gold jewellery to Bangladesh on August 28 through an acquaintance for his sister's wedding.

Kawsar's younger brother Md Suman and his friend Rohan collected the jewellery at the airport. After they reached Kawla on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway, Ripon, Al Amin, Rauf and Rubel allegedly intercepted them.

The four allegedly assaulted and intimidated the victims before snatching the 200 grams of gold jewellery and fleeing the scene.

Suman filed a case with Airport Police Station on August 29 in this regard.

Police later arrested Shanto and Rauf from Uttara Sector 1 and recovered 100 grams of the stolen gold jewellery from their possession. They were also placed on one-day remand.

After completion of their remand, the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Dhaka sent the arrestees to jail on Monday after investigating officer Sub-Inspector Sabbir Hossain produced them before it.
