BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury on Monday said his party holds a firm stance against “mobocracy” and remains committed to establishing a culture of tolerance and mutual respect in politics.
"You know, BNP is in a strong stance against mobocracy... BNP will not back down from that position,” he told reporters at BNP Chairperson’s Gulshan office after separate meetings with Gonoforum and National Democratic Movement (NDM).
The BNP leader made the remarks when asked about Sunday's harassment incident of former Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda at his Uttara residence by a group of people.
“BNP is committed to establishing the politics of tolerance and mutual respect in Bangladesh. There’s no scope to back away from here (that commitment). Those involved in such acts of mobocracy may have personal issues. It is not a problem related to BNP,” said Khosru.

“Anyone involved in mobocracy must face legal consequences,” he said, adding that that those who believe in the rule of law would never support such double standards that someones get justice while some others don't.
In reply to another question, Khosru said, “We are certainly moving towards February. The nation will also move ahead in unity. The date and schedule of the election will be announced in due time as per system.”
During the meeting, an 11-member Gonoforum delegation was led by its Presidium members Advocate Subrata Chowdhury and Advocate Jaglul Haider Afrik, and General Secretary Mizanur Rahman. Later, a five-member NDM team led by its Chairman Bobby Hajjaj had a separate meeting with Khosru.
