The BNP standing committee, the ruling party’s highest policymaking body, has sat in a meeting ahead of the upcoming presidential election.
The meeting began at 8:00pm at the BNP chairman’s political office in the capital’s Gulshan area with Tarique Rahman in the chair, PM's Deputy Press Secretary Jahidul Islam Rony told UNB.
BNP standing committee members Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Nazrul Islam Khan, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, Iqbal Hassan Mahmood, Selima Rahman and AZM Zahid Hossain attended the meeting.
Party sources said the nomination of the BNP candidate for the presidential election alongside its different organizational issues are most likely to be discussed.
On July 24 last, Mohammed Shahabuddin resigned as the president from office and Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad took the charge as the acting president.
According to Article 123(2) of the Constitution, an election to fill the vacant office of the President must be held within 90 days of the post becoming vacant due to resignation.
The president shall be elected by members of Parliament for a five-year term. A person shall not be qualified for election as President if he (a) is less than thirty five years of age; or (b) is not qualified for election as a member of Parliament; or (c) has been removed from the office of President by impeachment under this Constitution.
