The BNP Standing Committee is going to hold a meeting tonight (Friday night) to discuss the current political situation and organisational matters.
The meeting will be held at 9pm at the BNP Chairperson’s Gulshan office, said BNP Media Cell member Sayrul Kabir Khan.
BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman will preside over the meeting.
Party sources said although the meeting was not part of a previously scheduled plan and has no fixed agenda, it is considered an important one.
The meeting is taking place amid indications that Tarique Rahman may soon be made the party chairman.
During an exchange of views with journalists in Sylhet on January 4, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said Tarique Rahman would be formally elected as the party chairman within a couple of days.
Tarique was made the acting chairman of the party in 2018 after former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia was jailed.
A BNP Standing Committee member, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the meeting will discuss the country’s current political situation, organisational issues, election-related matters and the handling of rebel candidates.
He also said that after the passing of Khaleda Zia, the party may now move to make the acting chairman the full chairman in line with the BNP constitution.
“Tarique Rahman may be elected as the chairman of the party today. According to the BNP constitution, there is no obstacle for him to become the full chairman,” the BNP leader said.
