Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen has said that he wants to uphold Sylhet’s political legacy.
He said this while visiting the Jatiya Party-nominated candidate for Sylhet-1 constituency, Nazrul Islam Babul, at his office on Wednesday, according to a press release.
In a surprising turn of events, Nazrul withdrew from the election, prompting Momen to express gratitude for his decision, it said.
During the meeting, the foreign minister exchanged pleasantries and expressed gratitude for Babul's decision, emphasising the importance of maintaining the political traditions of Sylhet.
Speaking about the unexpected withdrawal, Momen stated, "I have no personal affiliation with this individual (Babul). There has been no discussion between us regarding the election. However, despite not having any personal acquaintance, he has refrained from contesting against me in the Sylhet-1 constituency, which is why I felt it was necessary to meet him and express my gratitude."
Momen acknowledged Sylhet's political history and stressed the need to preserve it. He said, "Sylhet has a political legacy, and we never disrespect different opinions and parties here. We want to maintain this. While our thoughts and ideologies may differ, we are all residents of the same city."
The foreign minister praised the JaPa leader's sacrifice, stating, "He could have contested against me for the Sylhet-1 seat, but he chose to step aside. This self-sacrifice is an exceptional example of Sylhet's political goodwill."
In response, Nazrul conveyed his respect for the Momen family, citing the significant contributions of Momen's late brother, former Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith, to the development of Sylhet. He clarified his decision to withdraw from the election, emphasising that he does not engage in politics for personal gain.
