Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir’s attempt to put the blame of daylong arson attacks in different places across the country on July 29 fell flat due to the presence of BNP’s student wing leader’s presence caught on camera when opposition activists attacked police’s armoured vehicles in Dhaka, reads a post on Awami League’s verified Facebook page.

The post on AL’s verified page contains a photo of Saif Mahmud Jewel, general secretary of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, wielding a bamboo stick, who apparently took part in yesterday’s attack on the armoured police vehicles in the capital.

An excerpt of the statement issued by Fakhrul that “AL men are responsible for the attacks” was also included in the post.

BNP’s sit-in programme yesterday at the key entry points of Dhaka was marred by clashes and violence, leaving an unspecified number of people injured.

Several vehicles were torched in different areas, including Matuail and Shyamoli, during the clashes between BNP activists and police.

Meanwhile, in a rare instance, BNP leader Gayeshwar Chandra Roy was seen having lunch with Chief of Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Mohammad Harun-Or-Rashid in a video shared yesterday.

Police yesterday picked up several BNP leaders, including senior leaders Gayeshwar Chandra Roy and Amanullah Aman, as they tried to observe BNP’s sit-in program in different areas. Later, they were released.
