Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud on Monday said BNP founder Ziaur Rahman “killed democracy” in Bangladesh.
“Ziaur Rahman was deeply involved in the assassination of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. That’s why Khandaker Mushtaq appointed Zia as the army chief after taking power,” he said.

The minister was responding to a question at a briefing at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Awami League Joint General Secretary said that Ziaur Rahman formed a political party while he was the army chief. “This is not something democratic.”

“Ziaur Rahman basically killed democracy and in turn was killed by his people,” Hasan said.
The foreign minister said that Abdus Sattar was the president after Ziaur Rahman's murder and Khaleda Zia was the prime minister for ten years. “Why didn’t they prosecute Zia's murder?”
Hasan Mahmud said, “They didn't prosecute Zia's murder because snakes would come out while digging up worms.”
