Former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir has denied reports that he will play in the Indian Premier League (IPL), but his British citizenship has revived interest in the one route a Pakistan-born player has used to reach the tournament.
"I want to make clear that the reports about the IPL are not true," Amir wrote on X on Monday.
Amir received a British passport in May, which led to speculation in the Indian media that he could enter the IPL as an overseas player.
The talk grew after he registered for the Afghanistan Premier League (APL) as a British national.
Former Pakistan all-rounder Azhar Mahmood took that route. Despite the bar on Pakistani players, Mahmood played in the IPL from 2012 to 2015 as an English citizen, turning out for Kings XI Punjab and Kolkata Knight Riders.
Pakistani players have otherwise been absent from the IPL since its first season in 2008, when Shoaib Akhtar and Sohail Tanvir were among several who took part.
Political tensions between India and Pakistan have kept Pakistani players out of the league since then.
Amir, a left-arm pacer, has retired from international cricket but remains active in franchise leagues around the world. He played 36 Tests, 61 ODIs and 62 T20 internationals for Pakistan.
