Bangladesh bowed out of 2023 with a 17-run loss (via D/L method) to New Zealand in the final T20I of the series in Mount Maunganui.
Bangladesh won the first match of the series in Napier, and the second match in Mount Maunganui ended without a result. It means, Bangladesh did not lose the series in New Zealand for the first time.
After being sent to bat first, Bangladesh were skittled out for a paltry 110 runs in 19.2 overs. Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto's 17 was the highest score, while Towhid Hridoy chipped in with 16. The batting performance was plagued by regular wicket losses, failing to provide Shoriful Islam a solid score to defend.
For New Zealand, Mitchell Santner was the standout with a devastating spell of 4-16 from four overs. Tim Southee, Adam Milne, and Ben Sears also chipped in with two wickets each.
Chasing a revised target of 95 in 14.4 overs, New Zealand reached 95/5, securing victory by 17 runs (D/L method).
Finn Allen's 38 and James Neesham's 28 were the key contributions for the hosts.
Shoriful Islam, who picked up two wickets to end the series with six scalps, was awarded the Player of the Series title.
The Bangladesh team is expected to return home on January 2nd. While they failed to win any series on the tour, Bangladesh did break new ground by claiming one ODI and one T20I victory on Kiwi soil – their first-ever white-ball wins in New Zealand.
