Shakib Al Hasan-led Fortune Barishal became the first team to march to the play-off phase of the ongoing Bangabandhu Premier League (BPL), beating Sylhet Sunrisers by 12 runs on Tuesday in Sylhet.
Defeat meant Sylhet on the other hand, were eliminated from the race for the last four.
Chasing a target of 200 to win, Colin Ingram put up a one-man show for Sylhet scoring 90, but it was not enough for Sylhet to avoid defeat, as they ended up on 187 for six in their 20 overs.
Alauddin Babu played some big shots once again in the late order, but it all went in vain.
For Barishal, Dwayne Bravo, Shakib and Najmul Hossain Shanto bagged two wickets each.
Earlier, Chris Gayle and Munim Shahriar came up with an opening-stand of 72 runs in just 6.4 overs. Munim was tremendous scoring 51 off just 28 balls with six fours and three sixes.
Gayle's innings was unconventional for him. He scored 52 off 45 balls with four fours and two sixes. Shakib meanwhile continued his good all-round form, scoring 38 off 19 balls with two fours and four sixes, to go with the two wickets he would pick up later with the ball. In the late order, Bravo posted 38 off 13 balls with four sixes and one four.
Sylhet's Shiraz Ahmed, the UAE player, was clobbered for 56 runs off his four wicketless over. Sohag Gazi, who had a good outing with the ball in the last game, ended with 1/45 off his 4 overs.
It was Sylhet 's sixth defeat in eight matches. In their next two matches, they will take on Comilla Victorians and Chattogram Challengers on February 9 and 12 while Barishal will take on Minister Group Dhaka in their last league phase game on February 11 in Dhaka.
