Chelsea is monitoring Cole Palmer’s fitness “day by day” and currently does not think the playmaker needs surgery for his groin injury, manager Enzo Maresca said Monday.
Palmer was substituted in the 21st minute during Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester United on Saturday after a recurrence of a groin problem that had already kept him out of Premier League matches against West Ham and Fulham before the international break.
Maresca said the club’s medical team is still assessing the situation. “It is more day by day, week by week, game by game, to see how he is and decide what we do,” the Italian coach explained ahead of Chelsea’s English League Cup match against third-tier Lincoln.
Asked if surgery might be needed, Maresca added, “The medical staff didn’t mention surgery until today. I don’t know if it will be in the next days or weeks, but honestly, I don’t think so.”
