Australia secured a commanding eight-wicket victory over Bangladesh in Saturday’s match of the ICC Cricket World Cup in Pune. The star of the show was Mitchell Marsh, whose unbeaten knock of 177 runs guided Australia to chase down Bangladesh's target of 307 with 32 balls remaining.
Australia, opting to field first after winning the toss, showcased disciplined bowling. However, the Bangladeshi batters finally found their rhythm, contributing as a team to post a challenging total.
After Bangladesh openers got off to a good start that provided the team's best Powerplay in the tournament, Abbott got the Aussies back in the game with the breakthrough, dismissing Tanzid Hasan for 36. That set the tone for Australia. However, Towhid Hridoy's resilient 74 and contributions from Litton Das and Najmul Hossain Shanto propelled Bangladesh to a competitive total.
Australia's bowling was spearheaded by Sean Abbott, who claimed two crucial wickets, while Mitchell Marsh and Adam Zampa provided valuable support. Abbott finished with figures of 2 for 61 in his ten overs.
In response, Australia began their chase with a brisk start, reaching 50 runs in just 8.1 overs. Despite losing Travis Head early, David Warner's solid 53 laid the foundation for Mitchell Marsh's breathtaking innings.
Marsh, with an unbeaten 177 off 132 balls, showcased his all-around skills, smashing 17 boundaries and nine sixes. Steven Smith's unbeaten 63 provided the finishing touch as Australia achieved the target in 44.4 overs, sealing their victory.
Bangladesh ended their World Cup with only two victories and seven defeats. Shakib Al Hasan, the current ODI captain of Bangladesh, whose World Cup campaign concluded after the match against Sri Lanka, had remarked that this World Cup would be remembered as Bangladesh’s worst ever.
