The Maldives Women’s team arrived here on Wednesday afternoon to participate in the Central Zone matches of the maiden Bangamata Asian Senior Women’s Volleyball Championship’2019 beginning at the Shaheed Suhrawardi National Indoor Stadium in Mirpur on Saturday (Nov 9).
Hosts Bangladesh will face Afghanistan in the opening match soon after the opening ceremony on Saturday afternoon.
Five Asian countries -- Afghanistan, Nepal, the Maldives, Kyrgyzstan and hosts Bangladesh -- will take part in the six-day meet named after Bangamata Begum Fazilatunnesa Mujib under the auspices of Bangladesh Volleyball Federation (BVF).
The remaining three foreign teams are expected to arrive in Dhaka on Thursday, BVF General Secretary Ashiqur Rahman Miku told UNB on Wednesday.
Earlier, BVF President and DNCC Mayor Mohammad Atiqul Islam presented a replica of the championship trophy and jersey of the Bangladesh Women’s Volleyball team to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday.
