The PCB said on Wednesday that a five-member panel including ex-captain Intikhab Alam and former international cricketer Bazid Khan unanimously chose Misbah following a robust recruitment process.

"I know expectations are high, but I am absolutely ready and up for the task otherwise I would not have thrown my name in the hat for one of the most challenging and coveted roles in Pakistan cricket," Misbah said in a statement.

On the recommendation of Misbah, another former captain Waqar Younis was chosen as bowling coach for the national team on a three-year contract.

Both former captains have previously worked together in between 2014-16 when Misbah was the captain and Waqar was the head coach.

The six head coaches of the newly formed domestic cricket teams will be the members of the national selection committee.

Misbah said that he had a candid discussion with Waqar that included roles and responsibilities, as well as how to take Pakistan cricket forward.

"I am excited to once again have someone as experienced and knowledgeable as Waqar Younis in my corner as a bowling coach," Misbah said. "We have exciting young fast bowlers in our ranks and there is no better person than Waqar to transform them into modern day stars."

Misbah capatained Pakistan in 56 test matches, winning 26, losing 19 and drawing 11. He also led Pakistan in 87 ODIs, winning 45 and losing 39.

PCB cheif executive Wasim Khan was also one of the members of committee that decided on appointing Misbah.

"The committee unanimously put their weight behind Misbah as it believed he was a perfect fit for the dual assignments due to his understanding, knowledge and demands of Pakistan cricket," Khan said.

Pakistan is due to host Sri Lanka later this month for a three-match ODI series at Karachi and a three-match Twenty20 series at Lahore.
