Gazi, sent to bat first, posted 182 at Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protisthan (BKSP) grounds in the ongoing Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League (DPDCL).
Mohammedan chased it down (183/7) with three wickets in hand in 45.2 overs with the help of captain Raqibul Hasan’s unbeaten 82.
Gazi bowlers dominated the match initially, taking five wickets in 51 runs. Mohammedan lost the first wicket in 25 runs when Abdul Mazid (13) fell to Ruhel Ahmed. Mohammad Ashraful, the former Bangladesh captain, came in at number three but suffered a golden duck.
After losing Mazid and Ashraful in successive deliveries, Mohammedan lost the wickets of Avishek Mitra (24) and Irfat Shukkur (0) on 48 in two consecutive deliveries.
Along with them, Nadif Chowdhury (1) and Bipul Sharma (9) also failed to help Mohammedan accelerate the innings. However, Raqibul was firm with the bat. In the eighth wicket stand, Raqibul and Sohag Gazi added 49 runs.
Eventually, Raqibul struck unbeaten 82, and Sohag scored 29 to ensure a win in their first match of the league.
Earlier in the match, Gazi stuttered at the start of the innings as they were at 26 for the loss of six wickets. Shafiul scalped three wickets in his first eight balls.
Mehedi Hasan was the first batsman to get dismissed. Rony Talukdar and Shamsur Rahman were also removed by Shafiul. After Shafiul bagged three early wickets, Alauddin Babu scalped the wicket of Gazi’s captain Imrul Kayes, who just posted seven runs.
Shafiul took the wicket of Raihan Uddin in his fourth over and bagged the fifth one - Parvez Rasool- in his fifth over to complete the five-wicket haul.
However, in the seventh wicket stand, Touhid Tareq and Shamsul Islam added 101 runs to avoid an embarrassing total.
Touhid fell during the 33rd over after hitting 56. Shamsul remained unbeaten for 71 off 111 deliveries. Coming into bat at number nine, Abu Hider struck 26.
Shafiul took five wickets conceding 32 runs, while Sohag Gazi bagged two wickets and Alauddin Babu, and Mohammad Ashraful scalped one each.
Shafiul was adjudged as the man of the match.
