South African captain Temba Bavuma fell victim to Mitchell Starc in the first over, failing to connect with the ball, resulting in a clean catch by the wicketkeeper.
Before reaching 10 runs on the board, South Africa suffered another setback as their key batter Quinton de Kock was dismissed by Josh Hazlewood.
Both Starck and Hazlewood claimed one more wicket each.
With only 24 runs on the board, South Africa found themselves four wickets down. The match was interrupted by rain after the 14th over.
