At least five people were killed and 41 others remained missing after a ferry carrying 271 passengers and crew caught fire in Indonesian waters, authorities said.
According to the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), the vessel caught fire near Madura Island while travelling from Surabaya, Indonesia's second-largest city in East Java, to Makassar in South Sulawesi. The ferry's captain alerted authorities after the blaze broke out, reports BBC.
Video footage aired by local broadcaster iNews showed dozens of passengers wearing life jackets aboard what appeared to be a lifeboat. Other videos captured people climbing down from the burning ferry as thick smoke and flames engulfed the upper section of the vessel.
