South African police have arrested four people in connection with the killing of former world boxing champion Zolani Tete, authorities said Monday.
Tete was sitting in his car outside his home in Mdantsane, Eastern Cape, last week when two armed men wearing balaclavas opened fire on the vehicle, police said.
Tete was reportedly waiting for the gate of his residence to open when the attackers ambushed him.
A woman who was inside the vehicle was also shot and injured. She was later taken to a hospital for treatment.
Police said one of the four suspects was arrested two days ago and was due to appear in court on Monday. The other three suspects are expected to appear in court at a later date.
Tete won the World Boxing Federation flyweight title in 2007 and held it until 2008. He later captured the World Boxing Organization bantamweight title in 2017 and again in 2019.
