Two madrasa students drowned in the Jamuna River while attempting to swim in Kazipur upazila of Sirajganj on Thursday.
The deceased were identified as Ariful Islam, 11, son of Abdul Halim of Chhoto Katenga Char area in Sirajganj Sadar upazila, and Junayet Hossain, 12, son of Jahangir Alam of Bhadrashimul village in Tangail's Bhuiyanpur upazila.
Rafiqul Islam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sirajganj Sadar Nau Police Station, said three students from a local madrasa went to the river near the No. 6 ghat area of Shanitpur in the morning to learn how to swim.
During the exercise, Ariful and Junayet were swept away by the river's strong current and drowned, while the third student managed to swim ashore safely.
After being informed, local fishermen launched an operation and recovered the bodies from the river in the afternoon using fishing nets.
Police later recovered the bodies and handed them over to the victims' families as no complaint was lodged.
A case has been filed with the concerned police station in this connection, the OC added.
