A total of 27 members of the notorious "Chhoto Jahangir Bahini’ including its chief surrendered to the Bangladesh Coast Guard in the Sundarbans in Chapulia Canal area of Mongla upazila in Bagerhat district on Monday.
They surrendered before the Coast Guard around 5 pm with some locally and foreign-made firearms and ammunition, Coast Guard West Zone (Mongla) Zone Commander Captain Mohammad Mesbahul Islam said on Tuesday.
During the surrender, three foreign-made firearms, one eight-shot shotgun, one four-shot shotgun, five locally made single-barrel guns, 15 locally manufactured pipe guns, two Chinese-made pipe guns, 340 rounds of live ammunition and 55 rounds of spent cartridges were deposited.
Gang chief Jahangir Sheikh, 45, was among them.
All of them hailed from different areas of Bagerhat, Khulna and Pirojpur districts.
According to Coast Guard officials, Chhoto Jahangir gang had long been involved in robbery in the Sundarbans and was accused of kidnapping fishermen and forest resource collectors for ransom.
Coast Guard Media Officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujan said continuous operations by the force have significantly weakened robber gangs operating in the Sundarbans, leaving them unable to continue their criminal activities.
