Police have arrested four people in a case filed in connection with the gang-rape of a 14-year-old girl in Sadar upazila of Khagrachari district late last month.
The accused identified as Arman Hossain, 32, Emon Hossain, 25, Enayet Hossain, 35 and Saddam Hossain, 32, were arrested on Wednesday, said Arefin Jewel, superintendent of Khagrachhari Police, on Thursday.
He said two more accused in the case—Munir Islam, 29 and Sohel Islam, 23—remain on the run since the incident but efforts are on to catch them.
The arrestees were sent to the court for further legal action after primary interrogation, said the Officer-in-Charge of Khagrachhari Sadar Police Station Abdul Baten Mridha.
The incident occurred on June 27.
According to the case statement, the victim is a resident of Latiban area under Panchhari upazila of the district and class VIII student of local Munigram High School.
On June 27, she had gone to a relative’s house in Bhaibonchhara area under Sadar upazila to see the Rath Yatra.
By the time the festivities concluded, it was too late for her to return, forcing her to stay overnight at her relative’s.
At night however, the accused stormed into the house, causing mayhem while accusing the residents of immoral activities there. At one stage they tied the hands and legs of her cousin and raped the victim in turns.
The accused filmed the incident on video and threatened not to disclose the incident.
The girl’s ordeal came to light on July 12, nearly a fortnight after the incident, when she was rushed to the hospital after attempting suicide. While under treatment at the hospital, she revealed what happened with her.
Medical tests confirmed her ordeal, said police without giving details.
Family members said on July 12 she made an attempt to commit suicide by consuming herbicide.
After receiving treatment at Khagrachhari Sadar Hospital and returning home, she experienced chest pain again due to poisoning and was readmitted to the hospital.
At this stage the girl’s father filed a case with Sadar Police Station on Wednesday night.
On Thursday, students from schools and colleges under the banner of ‘General Students’ staged protesta demanding punishment of the accused.
