A bus of Esha Paribahan was set on fire by unidentified miscreants at Oxygen Mor area last night during the countrywide 48-hour blockade enforced by BNP, Jamaat and like-minded opposition parties.
The incident happened around 11 pm, said Ferdous Jahan, officer-in-charge (OC) of Bayazid Bostami police station.
On information, two firefighting units rushed to the spot and extinguished the blaze, he added.
No casualties were reported.
A case will be filed against those who were involved in the arson attack, said the OC.
Yesterday morning, a bus was set on fire by picketers in Katghar area of the port city during a dawn to dusk hartal called by Chattogram city north and south unit BNP to protest the arrest of the party’s standing committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury.
Confirming the incident, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Patenga Police Station Aftab Hossain said, “The bus was parked there to pick up the garment workers. The driver parked the bus on the side of the road and went to a mosque to offer Fajr prayers.”
“A group of people arrived at the spot in CNG-run auto-rickshaws,” he said, adding, "They poured petrol on the bus and set it on fire in front of some garment workers."
Police doused the fire within 20 minutes, said OC Aftab Hossain.
