A court in Sylhet on Sunday acquitted all 70 accused in a case filed over an alleged bomb attack on former Sylhet mayor and Awami League city unit president Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran in 2015.
The accused, leaders and activists of the BNP, Jubo Dal, Swechhasebak Dal and Chhatra Dal, were acquitted in the case filed under the Explosives Substances Act.
Judge Prashanta Kumar Biswas of the Sylhet Tribunal for the Prevention of Crimes Affecting Public Security delivered the verdict.
Defence lawyer Advocate Mirza Md Yakut Hossain confirmed the verdict, ending the 11-year legal proceedings.
Earlier, on December 19, 2024, Judge Md Abdul Momen of the Sylhet Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court acquitted all the accused in the case filed under the Penal Code in connection with the same incident.
With Sunday's verdict, all the accused have now been acquitted in both cases filed over the incident.
According to case records, on January 1, 2015, leaders and activists of Jubo Dal, Swechhasebak Dal and Chhatra Dal brought out a procession in the Pathantula area of Sylhet city to protest an attack on the motorcade of then Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.
Police alleged that a bomb attack was carried out on Kamran during the procession and filed a case with Jalalabad Police Station.
The charge sheet was later submitted under separate sections of the Penal Code and the Explosives Substances Act.
Kamran died on June 14, 2020, while undergoing treatment for COVID-19 at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka.
