Police recovered the decomposed body of a 55-year-old woman from her apartment in the capital’s Pallabi area early Wednesday, days after her death apparently went unnoticed.
The incident comes shortly after the widely discussed death of Nurjahan Begum, 75, whose decomposed body was recovered from a flat in the same area on May 31 after reportedly remaining there unattended for about a week.
The latest deceased was identified as Selina Afroza, daughter of Khalilur Rahman and Afia Rahman.
The body was recovered around 1:30am from the flat on Road No. 10 in Mirpur Section-6 under Pallabi Police Station.
According to police, Selina Afroza had been living alone in the flat, which she inherited from her father. Her husband Mobinul Haque and their two children are living in Canada.
Police said victim’s nephew Ashfaqul Rahman last spoke with her over the phone on the night of May 26. Investigators believe she may have died sometime after that, causing the body to decompose.
Quoting local residents, police said Selina returned to Bangladesh around 12 years ago from Canada following a family dispute and had since been living alone in the Pallabi apartment.
They also said her husband and children did not keep regular contact with her.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Pallabi Police Station Hasan Basir said police rushed to the scene on Tuesday night after receiving information of foul odour coming from the flat but found the apartment locked from the inside.
“We informed the Fire Service, which broke open the main door. We then found the woman’s body lying on the floor,” he said.
The OC said the body was sent for an autopsy and later handed over to the family.
Primary investigation suggested that it was a normal death. However, police are investigating the incident, he added.
