Diplomatic Representative of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) based in Lisbon, Portugal, Farouk S. Adatia, KC, on Monday, conveyed AKDN’s strong interest in further strengthening its partnership with the Government of Bangladesh, building on the longstanding goodwill and friendship between the two sides.

He highlighted AKDN’s interest in exploring opportunities for private-sector investment in line with the priorities set by the new government in the areas of education, healthcare, infrastructure, and renewable energy.

The diplomat met State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam, MP, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and discussed issues of mutual interest.

The two sides also discussed the possibility of a future visit by Rahim Aga Khan V to Bangladesh at a mutually convenient time, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During the meeting, Adatia commended the revitalization of Bangladesh’s foreign policy since the new government assumed office in February.

He conveyed AKDN’s warm congratulations to Bangladesh following the election of Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman as President of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly, as well as Bangladesh’s earlier election to the presidency of the UNESCO General Conference.

While appreciating the valuable contributions of the community and the Aga Khan network in Bangladesh, the State Minister highlighted the country’s new and forward-looking foreign policy and identified areas where the network could contribute, particularly in line with budgetary priorities in the education and health sectors.

She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to further advancing its partnership with AKDN, with a particular focus on girls’ education and women’s empowerment.

She also underscored the immense potential of the creative economy, particularly in empowering rural women and helping them realize their potential.

The two sides discussed modernizing the education curriculum, including the integration of sports and cultural activities, language and skills development projects by the Aga Khan Academy, healthcare and nursing professional training, as well as the possibility of AKDN’s involvement in addressing the Rohingya humanitarian crisis, which requires greater attention and support from the international community.

Earlier, the AKDN delegation called on the Foreign Secretary and exchanged views on areas of mutual interest.
