Production of Aman rice, onion and soybean increased in the 2025-26 fiscal year, while potato output declined, according to the latest crop statistics of the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS).
The BBS quarterly report on crop statistics and agricultural labour wages for April-June 2026 shows that Aman rice production rose to 17.36 million tonnes in FY26 from 16.51 million tonnes in FY25, an increase of around 5.1 percent.
The area under Aman cultivation also increased to 14.17 million acres from 13.87 million acres during the period.
Onion production recorded a significant rise of around 18.6 percent to 3.82 million tonnes in FY26 from 3.22 million tonnes in the previous fiscal year. The cultivated area increased to 569,787 acres from 535,599 acres.
Soybean production also increased by around 25.5 percent to 136,183 tonnes from 108,481 tonnes, while the area under cultivation expanded to 171,101 acres from 142,780 acres.
However, potato production declined by around 2.6 percent to 11.27 million tonnes in FY26 from 11.57 million tonnes in FY25. The area under potato cultivation also fell to 1,149,049 acres from 1,229,298 acres.
The report also recorded a rise in maize production to 5.05 million tonnes from 4.87 million tonnes. Wheat production, however, declined slightly to 1.03 million tonnes from 1.04 million tonnes.
Among other crops, watermelon production increased to 2.08 million tonnes from 1.98 million tonnes, while sugarcane production declined to 2.90 million tonnes from 2.92 million tonnes.
Garlic production rose to 605,446 tonnes from 565,682 tonnes, while chilli production increased to 616,340 tonnes from 561,397 tonnes.
The BBS report also provided monthly estimates of agricultural labour wages, showing differences in earnings between male and female workers and between workers receiving food and those working without food.
In June 2026, male agricultural day labourers received Tk 622 for one meal, Tk 639 for two meals and Tk 664 for three meals. The corresponding rates for female workers were Tk 437, Tk 460 and Tk 515 respectively.
For workers receiving no food, the daily wage stood at Tk 648 for men and Tk 478 for women in June.
The figures show that male agricultural workers continued to receive substantially higher daily wages than their female counterparts across all the categories.
The BBS Agriculture Wing collects crop statistics through monthly field-level surveys. It estimates the production of six major crops using both subjective assessments and objective survey methods, while statistics on 140 minor crops are also compiled.
The report says the agriculture sector contributed an estimated 10.94 percent to Bangladesh’s GDP in FY2024-25, while around 44.68 percent of the country’s employed population was engaged in agricultural activities.
The Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics, under the Statistics and Informatics Division of the Ministry of Planning, prepares the quarterly report to provide agricultural data for estimating quarterly GDP and meeting the needs of users of crop and agricultural labour statistics.
