August 5 will now be a public holiday to honour Student-People’s Uprising Day, Cultural Affairs Adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki announced on Thursday.
Speaking at a press conference held at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital, Farooki said the decision to declare August 5 as a National Day commemorating the student-public movement will be finalised at the Advisory Council meeting on Sunday.
“Programmes centring the July uprising will begin on July 1 and continue till August 5. A detailed month-long plan will be announced next Monday. The main phase of the July programme will commence on July 14,” Farooki said.

“Just as the country united during the movement, this programme will also be implemented with everyone’s involvement,” he told journalists.
Farooki also noted that there are ongoing discussions to grant autonomy to state-run Radio Bangladesh Betar and Bangladesh Television (BTV). Education Adviser Dr CR Abrar is currently working on the matter, he said.
Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam, Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder and Senior Assistant Press Secretary Ahmmad Foyez were also present.
