She said the Australian government wants to support and work with indigenous communities through local and international non-governmental organisations (NGOs) like the Kapaeeng Foundation, BRAC, Save the Children and Plan International.
Morton, while addressing at the national conference of ‘Indigenous Peoples Human Rights Defenders (IPHRD) at CIRDAP auditorium, said the Australian High Commission is proud to support the IPHRD conference.
The Kapaeeng Foundation arranged the conference.
Kapaeeng Foundation, with the support of the Direct Aid Program of the Australian High Commission, Dhaka, is implementing a project titled ‘Strengthening the network of indigenous peoples’ human rights defenders for the promotion and protection of land rights of indigenous peoples in Bangladesh.’
The overall objective of the project is to contribute to enhancing respect for human rights of indigenous peoples and combating violence against indigenous communities in Bangladesh, said the High Commission.
Australia, a member of United Nations Human Rights Council, is committed to providing opportunities to assist indigenous peoples - both in Australia and overseas - to overcome social and economic disadvantage.
