Bangladesh’s economy grew by 3.49 per cent in the 2024-25 fiscal year, according to the final estimate of gross domestic product (GDP), lower than the provisional estimate of 3.97 per cent.

The latest figure of the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) also shows a slowdown from the 4.22 per cent growth recorded in FY24, according to official data released on Wednesday. It was 5.78 percent in 2022-23 fiscal.

At current prices, the size of the economy stood at Tk 55,15,062 crore (USD 456 billion) in FY25, up from Tk 50,02,654 crore (USD 450 billion) in FY24.

The agriculture sector posted a growth of 2.42 per cent in FY25, higher than the provisional estimate of 1.79 per cent. But, it was lower than the 3.30 per cent growth recorded in FY24, marking a decline of 0.88 percentage points year-on-year. The growth was 3.37 percent in 2022-23 fiscal.

The industry sector grew by 3.71 per cent in FY25, down from the provisional estimate of 4.34 per cent. Still, the final figure was slightly higher than the 3.51 per cent growth achieved in FY24, reflecting a 0.20 percentage point increase. The growth in the 2022-23 fiscal was massive 8.37 percent.

Growth in the services sector stood at 4.35 per cent in FY25, marginally lower than the provisional 4.51 per cent and significantly below the 5.09 per cent recorded in the previous fiscal year. This represents a 0.74 percentage point decline compared to FY24. The growth was 5.37 percent in 2022-23 fiscal.

The final GDP estimate for FY25 was prepared using the expenditure method. According to the data, the investment-GDP ratio declined to 28.54 per cent in FY25 from 30.70 per cent in FY24, a drop of 2.16 percentage points. It was 30.95 percent in 2022-23 fiscal.

The domestic savings-GDP ratio fell to 21.98 per cent from 23.96 per cent, while the national savings-GDP ratio declined to 27.67 per cent from 28.42 per cent in the same period. Compared with the previous fiscal year, domestic savings decreased by 1.98 percentage points and national savings by 0.75 percentage points.

Per capita income at current prices rose to Tk 334,511 (USD 2,769) in FY25, up from Tk 304,102 (USD 2,738) in FY24. It was Tk 273,360 in the 2022-23 fiscal.

The final estimate shows an increase of Tk 30,409 in per capita income in local currency terms, while in dollar terms the rise was USD 31 year-on-year.
