A student, allegedly affiliated with banned Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), was detained by the leaders of Jatiya Chhatra Shakti in the TSC area of Dhaka University on Tuesday evening and handed over to police.
The detainee was identified as Md Sakib, a student of the Department of Philosophy of the 2021-22 academic session and inmate of Bijoy Ekattor Hall.
According to sources, he had earlier been accused in two cases over attacks on protesters during the July uprising. He had also been expelled from the university for his alleged involvement in attacks on students on July 15, 2024.
Witnesses said leaders of Jatiya Chhatra Shakti spotted him in the TSC area in the evening and detained him.
Officer-in-Charge of Shahbagh Police Station said they would verify whether Sakib is named in any cases.
“We will check with the authorities whether there are cases against him. If his name appears in any case, he will be shown arrested accordingly,” he said.
Ashfaq Farhan Himel, joint general secretary of Jatiya Chhatra Shakti at Dhaka University, said they identified Sakib as one of the attackers during the July 15 incident.
“While we were at the TSC, we noticed a person who was among the attackers on July 15. He also posted violent content and threats on social media until August 3,” he said.
Himel said they then informed the proctorial team and took Sakib to Shahbagh Police Station in a university vehicle before handing him over to the police.
DU Proctor Prof Saifuddin Ahmed said Sakib is a student of the university and is named in two previous cases filed at Shahbagh Police Station.
