Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) detained a suspected international smuggler with around two kilograms of gold worth over Tk 1.89 crore, at a checkpost in Ramu upazila of Cox’s Bazar Saturday.
The detainee is Ulaying Rakhaine, 39. Details about her could not be known.
According to a media release, signed by Lt. Col Syed Wahiduzzaman Tanjid, commandant of the BGB-30 battalion in Ramu, the border force conducted a drive in Morichha joint checkpost in Ramu upazila around 3pm after being tipped-off that an international gang would smuggle a consignment of gold to Bangladesh from Myanmar through border.
As the woman arrived at the checkpost, the BGB personnel challenged her and found 24 gold bars and ornaments weighing 1.994 Kg, it reads.
The market price of the seized gold is estimated around Tk 1 crore, 89 lakh and 21, 480, the release said.
The detainee was handed over to Ramu police station and the seized gold was deposited to the exchequer, it added.
