A motorcyclist was killed in a head-on collision with a passenger bus on the Joypurhat-Hili regional highway in Panchbibi upazila of Joypurhat district on Saturday noon.
The deceased was identified as Akash Hossain, 28, son of Nazrul Islam, a fish trader from Modhupur village under Chak Borkat Union of Joypurhat Sadar upazila.
Akash was an employee of a private company.
Citing locals, police said the accident occurred near Nakurgachi Business Management School and College in Panchbibi municipal town around 1:30 pm when Akash was heading towards Hili on his motorcycle. His motorcycle collided head-on with an oncoming bus of Soumik Paribahan.
Fire service personnel rescued Akash in critical condition and rushed him to Joypurhat 400-bed General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Tambirul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Panchbibi Police Station, said the bus driver attempted to flee with the vehicle after the crash. Following a police chase, the driver and helper abandoned the vehicle, and police subsequently seized the bus.
A case will be filed in connection with the accident, the OC added.
