The cold wave is raging through Rangpur division and the regions of Mymensingh, Rajshahi, Nogaon and Sirajganj and it may continue, said a Met office bulletin.
Light rain/drizzle is likely to occur at one or two places over Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Dhaka divisions, it said, adding that weather may remain mainly dry with temporary partly cloudy sky elsewhere over the country.
In Panchagarh, the temperature dropped to 5.7 degrees Celsius in Tentulia on Thursday morning, country’s lowest in the season.
“This is the lowest recorded temperature so far this year,” said Arif Hossain, a meteorologist of Bangladesh Meteorological Department in Dhaka.
Tentulia, the last border town in Bangladesh’s north, experiences extreme cold weather in winter. Temperature dropped to 6.2 degrees Celsius on Wednesday.
On January 8 last year, mercury dipped to 2.6 degrees in Tentulia, the lowest-ever recorded temperature in Bangladesh’s history.
But there is no sign of respite for Panchagarh residents. “The temperature will likely to remain unchanged for the next few days,” Arif said.
Although the local administration has distributed 35,000 blankets, cold-hit people said termed it insufficient and residents of many areas are yet to receive warm clothes.
Meanwhile, the number of patients with cold-related diseases has increased here. Panchagarh Modern Hospital has reported a surge in outdoor patients.
Data released by the government on Thursday showed that a total of 5,481 people were affected by cold-related diseases across the country in 24 hours.
A minor girl and a mentally-challenged youth who suffered burn injuries in separate incidents of fire in Sundarganj and Sadullapur upazilas of Gaibandha, died at Rangpur Medical College Hospital early Thursday.
Dr MA Hamid Polash, chief of Burn and Plastic Surgery unit of the hospital, said Sadia and Alam, who sustained burn injuries while warming them in fire, were admitted to the hospital on December 18 and 20 respectively, and both died in the early hours of today.
Hospital sources said 26 burn patients were admitted to the hospital in the last 11 days after they suffered burn injuries in such fire incidents.
In Thakurgaon, an elderly woman was burned to death while warming herself in a fire at Bhomradaha village in Pirganj upazila on Wednesday night.
Bangladesh’s southern part might see a rise in temperature and experience rain, according to meteorologist Arif.
