A brief exchange took place in Parliament on Sunday after Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni said he was not informed of a change in the day's proceedings following the death of former Speaker and former acting President Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar.
At the beginning of the sitting, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad announced the death of the former Speaker, saying the parliamentary family was deeply saddened by the loss and extended its condolences to his family.
The Speaker said tributes to late Jamiruddin Sircar would be paid later during the sitting before the House was adjourned.
However, Chief Whip Moni immediately raised the issue, saying an earlier decision reached in consultation with the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker had been different.
He told the House that, according to the agreed plan, the Speaker would make introductory remarks, followed by speeches from one member of the treasury bench and one from the opposition in honour of the late former Speaker.
After that, Moni said, only urgent legislative business would be taken up, while the question-and-answer session would be suspended to allow lawmakers to attend the funeral prayers.
"I informed everyone based on that decision. I was not informed of any subsequent change," he said.
Responding to the concern, Speaker Hafiz Uddin said a fresh decision was taken to continue with the question-and-answer session first, followed by the presentation of a report related to the Ministry of Law.
The chief whip accepted the revised arrangement but reiterated that he was not notified of the change beforehand. "The decision is yours, and I have no problem with that. But I informed everyone according to the decision we took together. Afterwards, I was not informed of any change," he said.
The exchange ended amicably, with the chief whip noting that the schedule had simply been modified.
