Vice-Chancellor of Begum Rokeya University (BRUR) Dr. Shawkat Ali on Tuesday, was temporarily blocked by students after the university’s mass iftar event failed to provide meals to several attendees. He later apologized to the students and was allowed to leave.
The university administration had organized the iftar for about 7,500 people, including teachers, students, and staff, at the central football ground. However, due to insufficient food supply, hundreds of students could not receive their iftar despite holding tokens. Some students also complained that portions that were distributed smelled spoiled.
Students, frustrated by the shortage, surrounded the VC and chanted slogans calling him “fake,” before moving to his office to register complaints. Dr. Ali acknowledged the issue, admitting shortcomings in the arrangements, and promised action against responsible individuals. He also apologized to the students for the inconvenience.
According to attendees, many students had arrived at 4:00 pm as scheduled, presenting tokens to collect their iftar meals, only to find that supplies ran short. Guests invited from outside the university also reportedly received insufficient portions.
The VC assured that necessary measures would be taken against those responsible and reiterated his apology, calling for calm among students.
