Police recovered the bullet-riddled body of a young man from a border area in Kanaighat upazila of Sylhet on Saturday afternoon.
The deceased was Shahin Ahmad, 25, son of Abdul Latif of Keuti Haor village in the upazila.
His body was recovered around 3:00pm from a farmland in the Sonarkheor area of Lakshmiprasad Purba Union, near border pillar No. 1328.
Citing locals police said Shahin left home on Friday night but did not return. Around 10:00am on Saturday, locals spotted his bullet-riddled body in a farmland in Sonarkheor village, within Bangladeshi territory, and informed his family.
Later, his elder brother, Jashim Uddin, informed Kanaighat Police Station. Police then rushed to the spot and recovered the body.
Md Aminul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kanaighat Police Station, said the body had a gunshot wound on the back.
Legal procedures and an investigation are underway, he said, adding that the body would be handed over to the family after an autopsy.
Some locals suspect that the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) or armed Khasi individuals across the border may have shot Shahin, but the claim could not be independently confirmed.
