A worker died after falling from the third floor of an under-construction building in the Katlapur area of Savar on Thursday morning.
The deceased was identified as Bisheshwar, 49, hailing from Brahmanbaria district.
According to police and locals, the accident occurred in the morning when Bisheshwar was dismantling a bamboo scaffolding - the dangerously unstable temporary structure used by construction firms to lift workers and materials - at the under-construction building owned by one Anwarul Islam.
Although scaffoldings themselves are not unstable, when they are made of bamboos as they often are in Bangladesh, accidents have proven to be never far away.
Just as Bisheshwar suddenly lost control and fell to the ground. He was rushed in critical condition to Savar's Enam Medical College Hospital, where duty doctors pronounced him dead.
Eyewitnesses said the building owner had failed to implement any safety measures for the workers at the construction site.
Upon receiving the information, Savar Model Police recovered the body and sent it to the Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital morgue in Dhaka for an autopsy.
Saiful Alam, Savar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC), said they would investigate the incident and take legal action if a written complaint is filed. He added that such tragic accidents would decrease significantly if building safety codes are strictly followed.
