The Covid-19 infection rate in the country now stands at 3.43 percent, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said in a handout. “The mortality rate is now 1.51 percent,” the DGHS said.
Meanwhile, the new cases pushed up the national tally to 533,953 while the current overall detection rate is 14.77 percent. Until this morning, 478,546 patients (89.62 percent of the total reported cases) have recovered.
So far, 3,615,338 samples have been tested, including 14,633 in the past 24 hours. Bangladesh reported its first Coronavirus cases on March 8 and the first death on March 18 last year.

Global Covid-19 Situation
The total confirmed Covid cases worldwide have now surged past 100 million.
According to Johns Hopkins University (JHU), the total case count reached 100, 850,283 while the death toll climbed to 2,173,938 on Thursday morning.
The US remained the worst-hit country in the world, with 25,595,302 cases and 429,157 fatalities, as per the data. The number of dead in the US has been running at close to all-time highs at nearly 3,350 a day on average, reports AP.
But newly confirmed cases have dropped over the past two weeks from an average of about 248,000 per day to around 166,000. And the number of people in the hospital with Covid-18 has fallen by tens of thousands to 109,000.
Brazil registered 1,283 more deaths from the novel coronavirus and 63,520 new cases in the past 24 hours, its government said Wednesday.

According to its Ministry of Health, the death toll has climbed to 220,161 and the caseload to 8,996,876 since the start of the pandemic here in late February.
Brazil, which is experiencing a second wave of rising infections and deaths since December, began mass inoculation against Covid last week, with six million doses of CoronaVac, a vaccine developed by Chinese pharmaceutical firm Sinovac in collaboration with the Butantan Institute of Sao Paulo, and two million doses of a vaccine by Britain's AstraZeneca and Oxford University.
India’s total caseload has reached 10,689,527, while about 153,724 people have died so far from the virus, according to the latest Ministry of Health data.
Mass Vaccination in Bangladesh
A day after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the Covid-19 vaccination programme in Bangladesh, the Health Ministry on Thursday rolled out the inoculation drive at five government hospitals in Dhaka.
At Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Vice Chancellor Dr Kanak Kanti Barua kicked off the programme in the morning by getting a shot of Covishield, the Oxford-AstraZeneca-developed vaccine produced by the Serum Institute of India (SII), university PRO Prashanto Kumar Majumdar told UNB.

Health Minister Zahid Maleque, who visited BSMMU, said, “The side-effects of the vaccine are very rare and those who received the shots on Wednesday are doing better. The vaccination programme is going on in some hospitals on Thursday and our ministers, MPs and secretaries are getting their shots."
PM Hasina’s Vaccination Campaign
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday inaugurated the much-sought Covid-19 vaccination programme at a city hospital to check the coronavirus pandemic in Bangladesh.
Bangladesh first received two million doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine from India as gift and then received five more million doses from the Seram Institute of India.
