Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Sheikh Shariful Alam was rescued on Tuesday evening after remaining confined to the Administrative Building-2 for nearly 30 hours amid a student blockade demanding his resignation.
He was taken to Chattogram city by ambulance around 6:30pm in the presence of the deputy commissioner and superintendent of police of Chattogram as he fell ill.
Later, he was admitted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital.
The VC and several others inside the building had been suffering from prolonged power and water shortages due to the blockade.
Two former students who were accompanying the VC also fell ill. One of them, Shahriar, was taken to Evercare Hospital in Chattogram, while another, Titu Md Sohan, who suffered from high blood pressure, received treatment at the CUET Medical Centre.
VC Shariful said two former students were suffering from complications related to high blood pressure, prompting him to call an ambulance and a doctor.
"As everyone has been confined here for a long time, we are all feeling unwell and exhausted," he said.
Around 1:00am on Tuesday, CUET Medical Centre physician Dr Mohammad Abdullah and technologist Basudeb entered the building to examine them following discussions with the protesting students, after the VC sought medical assistance over the phone.
The protesters have warned that they would not unlock the building until the newly appointed VC resigns and former VC Prof Dr Abu Shadat Mohammad Sayem is reinstated.
According to witnesses, Shariful arrived on campus around 9:00am on Monday and later entered his office with leaders of the CUET unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), breaking the lock on the office building's gate.
The students gave him and his associates until noon to leave the premises. After the deadline expired, they locked the inner gate around 12:30pm on that day and disconnected the electricity supply.
Students enforced a complete shutdown at CUET since September 22, protesting the appointment of the new VC and demanding the reinstatement of his predecessor.
Teachers, officers and employees have also been observing work abstention in support of the demand.
Classes and examinations at the university have remained suspended for over 20 days due to the protests and work abstentions.
