Weeks after a Rajshahi unit BNP leader publicly called for “assassination” of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, a video has emerged of another BNP leader giving slogan – echoed by hundreds of supporters, and urging for a “fight to kill Hasina”.
In a video posted on the verified, official Facebook page of Bangladesh Awami League, Rashedul Hasan Ranjon, joint general secretary of BNP’s Sirajganj district unit, is heard shouting the slogan: “This time, the fight is to kill Sheikh Hasina and finish off Awami League.”
The video also shows senior BNP leaders on the stage with Rashedul at a protest rally in Sirajganj on Friday.

The post, containing the video, on AL’s verified Facebook page reads: “We condemn such acts of issuing threats from rallies, and demand exemplary punishment.”
The video has already triggered discussion on social media with many criticizing such slogans.
AL leaders and activists are taking such “death threats” seriously considering 19 attempts made on Sheikh Hasina’s life, including the heinous grenade attack in 2004 on an Awami League rally, in which around 24 leaders and activists were killed. BNP’s acting Chairperson Tarique Rahman was convicted for his involvement in planning the grenade attack.

Last year, a BNP volunteer front – Swechchhasebok Dal – leader’s similar “threat” to the PM also sparked anger on social media. In a speech, video of which went viral soon after, Abdul Qader Bhuiyan was heard publicly calling to restage “another 1975”, referring to the brutal massacre of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family members by a group of disgruntled army officers.
