Two children drowned in floodwaters in Banshkhali upazila of Chattogram on Friday, raising the death toll from drowning in different parts of the district to six over the past two days.
The latest deceased were identified as Mohammad Ashik, 8, and Mohammad Miraj, 6.
According to locals, the two children drowned while playing near their homes in Baharchhara union after being swept into water rushing from the hill following heavy rainfall, said Baharchhara Union Parishad Chairman Rezaul Karim Yunus.
Ashik, a resident of Madhyam Ilsha village, was rescued and taken to a private hospital in Gunagari, where doctors declared him dead.
Miraj, son of expatriate Kamal Uddin of Ratnapur village, went missing before family members found his body in the water after a search.
Banshkhali Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Ruhul Amin said the administration will provide assistance for the bereaved families.
With the latest deaths, six people, including four children, have died in separate drowning incidents in Banshkhali, Satkania, Hathazari and Anwara upazilas over the last two days.
In Satkania, Abdul Alam, 35, a Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal activist, went missing after falling into the swollen Sangu River on Thursday. His body was recovered early Friday.
Another youth, Md Sayeed, 17, died after being swept away by the strong current of floodwaters in the Durduri area of Charati union in Satkania.
In Hathazari, two-year-old Aniket Das, son of Ashish Kumar Das of the Mohammadpur area under the municipality, drowned in floodwater.
In Anwara, six-year-old Mohammad Ishtiaq, son of Mohammad Idris of Naldia area in Barumchara union, drowned in rainwater that had accumulated near his house.
