Train services between Dhaka and the northern and southern parts of the country resumed on Thursday after six hours of suspension following the derailment of a freight train at Lahirimohonpur Railway Station in Ullapara upazila of Sirajganj district.
Assistant Station Master of Lahirimohonpur Railway Station Atiqur Rahman said the wheels of the guard brake van of a Khulna-bound goods-laden train from Ibrahimabad Railway Station in Sirajganj veered off the tracks in the Dahkula area of Lahirimohonpur station around 9:15 pm on Wednesday, causing immense suffering to passengers.
Three trains remained stranded on Dhaka-Ishwardi route after the accident, causing further suffering to passengers.
A relief train from Ishwardi rushed to the spot at night and conducted the rescue operation. The railway authorities managed to restore the train line around 3:15 am on Thursday, six hours after the disruption.
A divisional committee has been formed to look into the incident.
