The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested 555 people and seized a large cache of illegal firearms, ammunition and narcotics during special drives conducted across the capital throughout June as part of its ongoing crackdown on crime.
According to the DMP's monthly crime statistics, a total of 363 cases related to arms and narcotics were filed during the month.
Of these, nine cases were filed under the Arms Act and 354 under the Narcotics Control Act. Police arrested 16 people in arms cases and 539 others in drug-related cases, according to a press release.
During the drives, police recovered four foreign pistols, 88 rounds of ammunition, seven magazines and 20 locally made weapons.
The DMP said its units are regularly conducting operations to prevent the use of illegal firearms and curb terrorist activities in the capital.
As part of anti-narcotics operations, police filed 354 cases and arrested 539 suspects.
The seized drugs included 233,412 Yaba tablets, 407.281 kg of cannabis, 2.909 kg of heroin, 319 bottles of Phensedyl, 76 bottles (450ml each) of foreign liquor, three litres of locally made liquor, 24.07 litres of locally distilled liquor, 34 cans and four bottles of beer, 74 Tapentadol tablets and 144 bottles of Eskuf syrup.
The DMP said special drives against illegal arms and drug traffickers will continue to maintain law and order and prevent crime in the capital.
